From my experience, I have found that skipping breakfast, snacking and eating late dinners (less than four hours before bedtime) are the habits of an obese person. These habits directly correlate to weight gain and other problems, such as, high cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension. A proper weight loss process will allow you to lose fat, rather than muscle, which will increase the fat-burning capacity. You will even increase your muscle mass (improving your shape) and improve you general health.
